The first time I met Sarah, we were talking at a party and somehow the topic of piracy in the Mediterranean came up. Sarah, wide eyed, said “Pirates?!” and I could see it in her eyes that she was imagining tattooed, peg-legged, patch-over-the eye kind of pirates. Like she was excited that they actually existed. I think of that as the moment I knew I wanted to be friends with her, and over the years, I have been delighted with her child-like beauty-filled imagination over and over again. Like for example, as a kid, Sarah asked repeatedly every year for a locket with a real unicorn inside. Eventually, after many disappointed holidays, she told her dad that she was going to just ask Santa for the locket. And that’s when her dad had to break it to her that neither Santa nor unicorns were real. So Sarah had this secret resolution that one day, she would know the man she was to marry because he would give her a locket. Albert gave Sarah a locket the morning that they got married.
Like Sarah, Albert has this incredible ability to create fun all around him. He is one of the best dressed guys I’ve ever known. He wouldn’t hesitate to sing a showtune for you a capella, on demand, the first time you met him. He makes everyone feel welcome and lightens the mood of any gathering. He and Sarah are absolutely best friends. In a way that I have rarely seen in a couple. They “get” each other’s joy, and they meet each other there. Their story is layered and deep and funny and I could go on and on about all of the ways that they move me and others, but instead, I will share with you the way that I saw them on their wedding day.
A big thanks to Dave Lueck for shooting with me that day, as my usual partner, Jewel was not able to be there. Dave has this amazing sense of presence in his work that I think you will see here.
I had been anticipating the wedding of my dear friends Sarah and Albert all year. Three reasons. Primarily, because I am so happy about these two getting married. Secondly, my 3 year old daughter Charlotte has a very special friendship with Sarah, and she was was going to be their flower girl. Lastly, I had the immense privilege of being the photographer that got to capture all the mad beauty of these two people and what would happen surrounding their wedding. I have so much to say about how deep and beautiful it all was, but before I share the wedding with you, I wanted to give a little teaser with some photos I took the night before the wedding. Sarah and Albert hosted their two families and a handful of friends at their beautiful home in the city. Hope you all enjoy this first look into the weekend!
I absolutely love Sarah and Blake Reeves. I photographed their wedding in 2009, and now they have a beautiful baby girl named Charlotte (Charlotte recently turned one). We spent a few hours on a crisp fall Saturday hanging around their house taking a few pictures. Here are some of my favorites.
Mallory and Casey energize me. Their playful friendly personalities extend even into what they wear. We had a great evening shooting together at their home and around a few Kansas City neighborhoods where they have spent a lot of their time together as a couple. Take a peek!
My friends and long-time clients the Beckmans recently welcomed their second son, George into the family. Diana and I were both pregnant this summer, and it has been so fun to be along on the journey with them, making our families of three into families of four. I hope that I can pull off bringing another baby into the world with the grace and effortlessness that they have. Here’s a glimpse at awesome little George, Henry, Diana, and Jason.
